Outfit Challenge – Styling 3 Underloved Garments

It looks like summer is here to stay in Toronto at last! Goodbye three seasons in one day and hello warm weather clothes. Judging by the looks of my wardrobe, it’s quite a tornado’s hit. But it has a system to it! All the cold weather clothes are shoved up on the shelf, blouses are hung on the left, and dresses hung on the right. Oh, and there are sections in the back where I exile clothes I don’t wear often but don’t have the heart to get rid of.  We all have those clothes we buy thinking “omg this is totally fetch“….and a week later, we realize fetch isn’t gonna happen. (At least you tried, Gretch) Anyways, I decided to flex my styling muscles and show these forgotten garments some love!

Exhibit A – Lacy Top

Why I haven’t worn it

I bought this top from Only when I was 17. I’m 21 now. And I can shamelessly say that this has not seen the light of day! Although it’s versatile, it’s high maintenance to wear. The sheer lace shoulders demands an impeccably fitted strapless bra that I didn’t have until now. Under a thin white shirt, it’s more natural to wear a bra the color of your skin than a white one

This is simple night out outfit compete with shiny leggings and a clutch. When I don’t feel like wearing a party dress, faux leather leggings and a dressy tank top are my go-to.

Look 2

So it’s out of the party and back to work. I kept it somewhat casual with a wrap skirt and 3/4 sleeve blazer.

Exhibit B – Floral Skirt

Why I haven’t worn it

I bought this skirt while shopping in China last year and it’s only been worn once on a laundry day. It’s the second longest skirt I have, since I’m a miniskirt kind of girl. I was also paranoid that it would me look too childish.

One of my holy grail fashion amendments is that you can never go wrong with a ruffled white top. It can instantly make your outfit look more elegant. I added some charm jewelry and nude heels. This is something I’d wear to brunch. Another tip- never wear stiletto heels on grass.

Look 2

A floral skirt doesn’t have to be girly! Here, I wore it with a casual t-shirt and sneakers to throw some of my inner tomboy in the mix. Choker necklaces are great to pair with graphic tees. I’d wear something like this for running errands or on me-time days.

Exhibit C – Shirt Dress

Why I haven’t worn it

I got this Nastygal dress for free at a clothing swap. At that time I grabbed it because who can say no to Nastygal? I’m usually super paranoid about oversize clothes, so styling this one was a bit of a challenge for me. The best piece of advice I can give for oversize clothes is to either wear an oversize top with a tapered bottom or vice versa.

Look 1

An oversize top with over the knee socks seems to be especially trendy in Asia. I love thigh high boots and socks because they emphasize the legs while still giving coverage. This is something I’d wear on a cute date.

Look 2

The good thing about t-shirt dresses is that they can be a t-shirt too. I tucked it into black denim shorts and paired with sneakers and a hat. This would be a good outfit for exploring the city or enjoying Toronto’s parks.

Tag! You’re it! I challenge you to think outside the box and show some love to clothes you haven’t worn much.
