A fashion student’s secrets to looking fabulous in the simplest outfits

There’s a saying at Ryerson about how you can always tell us fashion students apart from the general crowd. I guess you can call it the fashion vibe. You know when you see someone on the street and think “wow, they look good” even though they’re in jeans and a t-shirt? We’d get complimented on our everyday outfits and whenever we say, “thank you, I study fashion,” the response would be “I had a feeling you do!” So this week, I’m betraying my creed by giving away all of our secrets. Just kidding! But I will share with you my tips on how to look effortlessly put together.

Know what silhouettes work for you

The easiest way to look good with minimal effort is making sure your clothes fit well. Thing is, you don’t have to wear fitted clothes all the time. There are so many possibilities for silhouettes! For example, oversize tops and jackets look so high-fashion on taller gals. They can also look adorable on more petite ladies too. The internet has a lot of guides that tell you what to wear and what not to wear for your body type. However, the only way to really know is to try for yourself. Once you know what works on you, even the plainest pieces will look like a million bucks.

Effortless makeup

No time to do a full face of makeup? No problem. My bare-bones makeup routine for when I only have five minutes is foundation, eyebrows, and mascara. Foundation or concealer corrects skin imperfections, which goes a long way. Filling in your eyebrows not only brings out your eyes, but it makes your whole face look more structured. Just a few strokes of mascara or a neutral eye shadow can make the eyes look complete.

Subtle accessories

Contrary to the name, one does not need statement jewelry to make a statement. Even the simplest jewelry (ex. charm bracelet, pendant necklace, single ring) can pull together an outfit. It’s kind of interesting how we notice and respond to even the smallest details. Personally, I love stainless steel bracelets because they never need to be taken off! Faux diamond stud earrings are also a favorite of mine since they’re so glam, yet understated.

Take care of your nails!

I feel like nails often get overlooked (unless you’re a manicurist or instagram queen). Although nails are only a small part of the whole look, people do notice them. If clean nails is an essential for going into an interview or big event, why not keep them maintained for everyday life?  If you’re like me and can’t be bothered to paint your toes, close-toed shoes are an easy cheat. Even with un-polished nails, trimmed cuticles and overall cleanliness do make a big difference.
