10 traits of a fashion rebel – could this be you?

The fashion industry can be a vicious pit of consumerism and lifestyle marketing. But to me, fashion is first and foremost a form of self expression. Somehow, it has become rebellious to be individualistic when the media pushes for conformity. This week, I’m sharing some common traits of fashion rebels.

You only indulge mainstream trends if you genuinely like them

You’re just not the type of person who will run out to buy the latest trend just because it’s accessible and everyone else is wearing it. More often than not, you get turned off by something that you see everywhere.

You face your fashion fears

There are certain styles you don’t feel good in. But that doesn’t stop you from trying to get over the fear and paranoia. I used to only wear tighter clothing because I was scared of “looking fat”. Now, I can’t live without oversize sweaters.

You don’t let your body type dictate your choices

You wear heels even if you’re tall. You wear oversize even if you’re petite. You wear low cuts even if you’re big chested. If you like something, you’d go for it. Simple as that.

You wear whatever colours you want year round

You don’t care for summer or winter colours. I frequently get customers asking me if the nail polish they’re buying matches the season. My honest response is: if you like it, why does it matter?

Seasons? What seasons?

You find the term “last season” so exhausting. Who has the money to buy clothes only to wear for one fashion season? You don’t care if the pair of heels you got were part of an old collection. They’re perfectly good and you’ll wear them for years to come.

You literally don’t care what others think

You appreciate input from people close to you. But if Greg from accounting doesn’t think you look good with blonde hair, you couldn’t care less.

You’re not against wearing something frequently

Washing machines exist for a reason! If you found a dress you’re in love with, you’d wear it all summer. If you only have several work blouses, you’d rotate them. After all, most garments don’t need to be washed after every wear. (But please wash your underwear)

Ladies, you don’t match your undergarments

Who has time to match their bra and panties??? Sometimes, you’d match them for an event and feel super cute. But it’s way too much work to do daily. You’d rather use your mental energy on something else…like keeping up with your Starbucks gold status.

You say “it’s a look” a lot

This shows you’re open minded! You believe that there’s no right and wrong in fashion. Just because you don’t see yourself in something doesn’t mean it can’t suit someone else.

You don’t hesitate to drop a company that has crossed you

Horrible customer service experience? Dubious ethics? CEO you just can’t support? You recognize that you have power as a consumer. You’d rather take an active approach and be part of change.

How many of these statements describe you?
