Eccentric style vs. Elegant style

I feel like when we describe our personal style, there’s a divide. We could either say “I like experimenting and trying unconventional things” or “I like polished and streamlined fashion.” And to that, I say why not both? Sure, it’s important to dress for the occasion, but that doesn’t mean we have to like one more than the other. Here are some of my favorite looks from both ends.

Let’s start with the eccentric side

Feminine dress with moto jacket

I love everything about this outfit Kimbery Garner wore. Contradicting pieces can be difficult to style, but with this outfit, ‘edgy’ and ‘delicate’ work well together. A feminine dress paired with edgier pieces like a moto jacket, combat boots, statement jewelry, or sneakers is one of my favorite outfits.

Neons

Neons have really been making a comeback. Especially neon tie dye hoodies. Wearing a bold, eye catching color is announcing to the world ‘hey, this is me. I’m unapologetically myself.” If the rest of the outfit is toned down enough so that the neon could pop, it makes a great urban streetwear look. I don’t think I’d ever be bold enough to wear full body neon, would you?

Alternative accessories

So I know I’m a lazy fashion gal who doesn’t give accessories time of day…but I can’t help wanting to collect them! I’m the type of person who buys accessories as a way to preserve memories. For example, I bought some handmade jewelry as souvenirs when I traveled to Nova Scotia.

Unconventional, almost childish accessories like these help me feel connected to the emo phase I never grew out of.

Now let’s go to the elegant side

Black Turtleneck

They say every girl needs a little black dress, but not every girl enjoys wearing dresses and skirts. So I believe that more importantly than a black dress, every girl needs a black turtleneck!

It’s flattering and versatile on everyone! You could wear it with just about anything. Most people pair it with jeans, but I’m personally not a fan of that look. I prefer a badass, all-black outfit with a turtleneck. Plus, black turtlenecks just have an aura of power and command….anyone else feel the same?

White blouse with accents

I find these types of blouses so much more interesting than plain white button ups. I guess this would be ‘elegant with an eccentric twist’. A white blouse with accents, ribbons, or ruffles is a modern Victorian look. It could also be Parisian-chic paired with a low ponytail and red lipstick.

There’s not much versatility with these types of blouses. I feel like you must wear formal shoes and dress pants or a skirt, or you’d ruin the look. Let me know if you have a way to style this casually!

Red wool coat

I totally want a red coat so I can be a modern little red riding hood. I had a cheap one as a teenager that got worn out and never replaced.

Unfortunately I live in Canada, where fall is only a few weeks long and winter is too frigid for me to wear a wool coat. I’d invest in one if I ever move somewhere with less harsh winters….wouldn’t it be crazy to move to a different continent for the sake of fashion?
